Need Medical Insurance? Need Help Navigating The Healthcare System?
Itâs that time of yearâopen enrollment. And SLO County has a new enrollment counselor
to help residents get medical expenses covered.
Meet Bernie Rubio! Bernie helps people navigate the health care system in both English
and Spanish. People reach out to Bernie for support and with questions about health
insurance and finding affordable medical care.
Bernie helps so many SLO County residents in many different situations: someone is
hospitalized unexpectedly and is unable to pay the bill; a family arrives to the U.S.
and is unsure how to get health insurance; a Cal Poly student arrives from out of
state; a long-time SLO County resident is not yet old enough for Medicare but suddenly
needs health insuranceâŠ
âTaking care of our health in the early stages is really important. If we do that,
then it will save lives,â said Bernie.
Bernie encourages anyone to call him if they have questions, especially because you
might discover resources that you didnât know were an option for you. Bernie speaks English and Spanish.

Setting goals can be a great way to challenge yourself to make healthy lifestyle changes. Set yourself up for success by making your goals SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely.
The college years are an exciting time of personal growth, but they can also bring academic, social, and financial pressures, which can worsen underlying mental health and substance use issues. By taking a brief MindWise Screening, students can learn if they have a behavioral health issue and learn signs and symptoms. Immediately following the brief questionnaire, they will see the results, recommendations, and key resources. Please, click here to learn more about this amazing tool and general ways to engage students.
